South Carolina is known for its shoreline of beaches and marsh-like sea islands. Charleston is a historic city, defined by pastel-colored houses and Old South charm. The Grand Strand, a roughly 60-mile stretch of beachfront, is known for golf courses and the vacation town of Myrtle Beach. Sullivan's Island was a stop for the pirate Blackbeard and the setting for Edgar Allen Poe's "The Gold Bug”. Along with history and attractions comes a rich heritage. Widely believed to have begun between the ’40s & ’50s in the Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach, the Shag is a smooth, laid-back dance. It’s believed that dancers slowed down and modified the jitterbug due to the summer heat in those oceanside pavilions before the use of air conditioning. The shag is the official dance of South Carolina, and Myrtle Beach is the best place to try your dance moves, or at least watch the experts while enjoying Carolina Beach Music.
